Gents...

My search on the forum didn't yield much except a thread that was about a year old regarding this subject.

Apparently there is service from the airport into the city but you have to change trains as they're not the same type trains.

Anyone ever done this on the Skytrain? Is it simply not worth the hassle if you're carrying a piece of luggage etc?
Cost?

I'm guessing a taxi is more expensive but sometimes when you figure out the "time/money/hassle factor" equation, it's worth paying a bit more for the taxi option.

Thanks for any input.

Kap,
im sure someone has used this service, maybe even Jimbo of C&D's if my memory serv's me right. But for 300 baht in a meter taxi off level 1 of Airport on arrivel wont hurt the spending funds.

The airport link is easy

take the airport train not sure which floor but easy to find and stay on 'till phaya thai and change there, 4 stops later you are at nana
here is a link to the webpage with big map. Its easy and cheap better than 400baht for a longgggggg slowwwww ride into town!

Its just really easy. Its self explanatory once you get to airport. If theres just one of you, its cheaper than taxi, and makes a change from just jump on taxi. (Its on the bottom most floor at airport)

take the taxi.

To use the airport train.
1) take the express train, at Makhasan station walk to the subway (across the street), take subway to Asoke, transfer to skytrain, 1 stop to Nana
2) take the local train to Phaya Tai station and connect to Skytrain from there.

Option 1 will end up costing 200 Baht, require you to walk your bags to the train, to the subway, and then upto the skytrain. Time wise, probably slower than a cab
Option 2 is cheaper, but takes a lot more time.

I took the train once, and all I had was a backpack. I won't bother ever again, not to save 100 Baht.

So the taxi fare is anywhere from 200-400 baht? That's relatively inexpensive and maybe worth the little extra for the greater convenience door to door to Dynasty Grande. I'm by myself with a roller bag so won't be too bad.

Can anyone tell me what hours the airport train runs? I am being told everything shuts down at night. I could not find this on the BTS website.

Total 70 baht all the way...allow 1 hour from the Nana Station platform to the the airport station (as long as no delays on the Skytrain).

Suggest one cabin bag and one check-in bag. Depending on the time, the Skytrain and the airport train can be crowded, so more bags can be a bother. Worked fine the last time I rode it...

Thanks Dutch, that puts it just out of my range. I arrive 11:05, and by the time I clear immigration, find my GF, give her a kiss or two, and get down to the train level, we might just miss the last trip. Taxi will have to do. Better for cuddling anyway. And easier with the luggage.

I have thought of using this but flights from my neck of the woods usually come in late like 23:00 or so so never consideredit an option just not enough time to get there before one or more of the trains shut down

For a backpacker the airport train is not that bad! You go to Phaya Tai and change to the skytrain heading for Nana. But as ironic as it sounds: The airport train and the infrastructure arround it is not constructed for travelers with luggage. I tried this with a 20kg suitcase. It was not a good idea! Crowed narrow staircases and 33°C …

So when I traveled further on to Chiang Mai. I tried plan B: Take a taxi to Makkasan-Station and then catch the airport train to the Airport. The taxi driver honestly did not find the entrance to Makkasan Station, and drove on to Ramkhamhaeng Station.

Finally, when I came back from Chiang Mai to Bangkok I tried it the other way around. I took the airport train from the Airport to Makkasan Station (which is a huge and modern Station) and headed for the taxi rack. There were already 10 other falang waiting. Within 30 minutes one (!!!) Taxi arrived. So I took my 20kg suitcase and carried it about 300m to the main street.

Travelling is always and adventure …

Kinda sounds like the taxi is just going to be the better all around option. I've been on the crew bus from the airport to downtown and it's not a bad ride and there was not much traffic. I think my flight gets in around noon or 1 pm.

Thanks for the info guys.

If your hotel is along the skytrain station the train is not a bad option, provided you not have bulky luggage. It will take only about 50 minutes.

But if you have big luggage or not easy to carry luggage, less then 10 euro's of 8 pounds, taxi is a better idear, if you still want to save on the taxi, take on from the departure level, since they are eager to take you.

I live at Nana and love the Link. b150 round trip. Take that, you scamming cabbie bastards.
But as mentioned, only a good idea if you have no more than two carry ons. I take a backpack
and my computer and use the link all the time.

You can also take the Express and it goes to Phaya Thai without stopping for b100. But from there only
b25 to Nana on the Skytrain. Swear by it, especially for short trips. Which reminds me, anyone ever
done the train/bus thing BKK to PKT?

Can get Express to Makkasan too. If not imminent its not really worth waiting for the express, then jump on the regular, only about 30 baht if I remember rightly. I normally go to Makkasan, then if heading nana way with luggage, go out to the main street, ignoring the taxi scammers immediately outside the station then flag a meter taxi down...About 45 baht to Nana. If not packing too much luggage .then just get on the MRT to Asoke...walk or BTS Nana.
