what if u were watching "our" porn!!!

Posted ImageWith a sense of humor because when Mashable’s Pete Cashmore wrote that Facebook users should bebeware that the new timeline feature could embarrass a user, I just had to see what the porn industry was doing. Porn has been trying to get involved in social media, but for a multi-billion dollar industry we tend to turn a blind eye to what is arguably one of the internet’s most popular features, and one of the most consumed but unacknowledged products out there.
So imagine my surprise to see a couple of porn sites this morning using Facebook Connect, and yes, they knew who I was. Embarrassed possibly, more humored because this really is how the adult industry is going to get into social media and it will be done because users rarely log out of facebook (even that might not help) and facebook connect is everywhere.
So how are we going to manage our privacy when we hit porn sites that are notorious for viruses, illegal porn, many many pop up’s that does not mean that we really wanted to go there. Are we ready to see what your particular taste is in the industry that cannot be mentioned or promoted on social media?
So exactly how is Facebook going to let us screen our timeline before we really get going and dive deeper into the things that we really do not want our friends and neighbors to know about.
Embarrassing maybe depending on who you are, I can lay really good money on the table that people who follow celebrities are going to love knowing that celebrity X visited X site because they didn’t log out. T he paparazzi is going to have a field day with this. And that is just if you are famous. Now imagine being big in the church but with a fetish, imagine being a fine upstanding member of the community with a few rough edges.
Honestly until facebook gives me an opportunity to scrub my time line in simple easy to understand point click and understand, maybe it is time to give facebook a rest, log out, purge the cookies, and not use the system until they do. In the mean time porn sites are starting to use facebook connect, this is going to be one very wild rollout and people are going to freak.

Celebrity X cannot visit any porn site. She forgot to pay her internet bill so her internet and TV was cut. :Smile 1:

Joke aside thanks for warning… maybe solution is to have 2 FB accounts and you just open your XXX compatible FB account before you start browsing for.. khm.. educational sites.

Numerous reports of privacy invasion, behavioural targetting...and these are only the things that get out to the press. Best to avoid completely. I do my social networking old-school style and actually phone and meet people - I haven't found anything yet that beats it.

I luckily had a friend point out to me that he could see when I posted/ liked a picture, which could have had the potential to be pretty embarrassing since most of my friends don't know about my interest in LB's.

I still use Facebook, I am just more careful in what I do now.

Just a little note to all this.

You have to manually APPROVE a facebook connect, and if you do it, you will (most often) have to agree that the site you are connecting to, can post on your wall, see your friends etc.. So just DONT agree on it, just to make access to a unknown site easier.
But: NO sites can connect to your facebook profile, unless you manually approve it.

If you already did, and you regret it, there is a very simple way to remove it.
Go to Privacy settings >> then Apps - And you can remove any application (Apps) that is connected to your profile.
You can also report the Apps, if you think they violate the terms.
If you want to keep the Apps, then, you can even hide it, and make it visible to "Only Me"...

So, with a few minutes of study on your facebook privacy settings, all this can be avoided.

But, it is NOT possible that anyone connects to your facebook account without you Manually approved it first.

If anyone needs it, I can make a little tutorial on how to make your settings, to avoid this...

Yeah, it's good, if you want to maintain your current network.
Then no need to have facebook, but for people who wants to expand their network, facebook is one of the easiest way to do so.
But if your concerned about safety/security, I would say, you took the right decision...

fie if you deactivate it, and leave it for a certain time, i am 100% it eventually cancels.
but even if you deactiviate it, no on can get access to it.
what i did was changed my password that would be impossible to remember, then deactivate my account, therefore cannot remember my password, so no more facebook, i just find it dangerous for giving away too much online info.

How did you get rid of it Garry? I have looked for a way to do it several times. I could uninstall it but I would still be on their books, right?

May be obvious but delete all your pictures and any other personal information ... then wait a couple of days then deactivate it. The pic's will still be on their servers (with no links) for some time but may get purged at some point down the road.

the EU are working on new laws to force facebook and others to totally delete accounts and all info contained there if requested - it could take up to 2 years to get through the system !
