Just wondering what anyone's train experiences might be in taking, for example, the overnight
route from BKK to PKT. I like the idea of overnighting it and am curious to see the country
from the train perspective. It actually only goes to Surat Thani, where you connect with a bus,
but I'm cool with that.
I know there are routes that go to Vientienne and Chiang Mai, but that the trains are slightly
different. Any anecdotes welcome, however. Will be banging a gong in Patong in about a week.

Did it along long time ago.....so no up to date info, then on to Koh Samui. I like train journeys. But Surat Thani is wrong side of the peninsula, don't know what the bus transfer time is ?

trip to surat thani very nice - better to do in daytime to see the nice scenery - i usually have a break in hua hin also.
surat thani to phuket about 3 hours by bus from memory - you can also stop at khao lak national park which is nice too -
about halfway to phuket

If you are going to do it as an over nighter why not just fly unless you are planning a side trip to Samui? You're not gonna see much and the tx times and bus trip will add at least 5hours ( it takes me in a Sportrider 3 hrs hkt to ST and that's without stopping). Bkk- Hkt is an hour and you have an extra night in hand. Given the crazy minibus drivers and the death of 5 people in a black taxi yesterday just over the bridge in Phang Nga I know what my choice would be. Edit: one of th Thai girls I know has posted a thai newspaper photo of the accident on facebook. Definitely NOT going to re-post it here. I can never understand their fascination with the gruesome side of death.
