We are talking about a small extremely high risk minority here not The total Thai population.
The official statistics for gay men in Bangkok shows that it is 1 third in other words 33%. That is hard facts not someone just making an estimate out of thin air. There are no official statistics for ladyboys but there is no reason why it should be any lower. And the Red Cross anonymous clinic, you know the guys that does most of the testing on thais in Bangkok and also treat a very large part of everyone living with HIV in Bangkok, both thai and foreign are saying that the percentage for transsexuals are likely even higher than for the gay population.
So we are talking way over 30%. There isn't anyone more qualified to do an estimate than these guys.

And in total I think Thailand is at about 1% so way below sub Saharan Africa as you wanted to compare it with.
That said what do you think the percentage of transsexuals infected in sub Saharan Africa would be? Sure higher than the rest of the population right?

Unless every ladyboy is tested I think it's hard to get an accurate percentage, although I'm sure it's higher then the national average, in regards to a transsexual in sub Saharan African, they would be killed, probably beaten to death for being openly TS or gay.

sure to be 100% sure what the number is everyone needs to be tested. But if that is the standard to go by then every statistic on just about every subject that there are statistics about in this world can not be trusted.

That said what makes you believe that you can make a more accurate estimate than the doctors and researchers at red cross and Chulalogkorn hospital? Just wondering as I would be happy if you where actually right and have some evidence to back it up.

I haven't thrown any figures around you have, you can't just pull a number out of thin air and expect me to believe it, like yourself I need actual evidence..

Whatever the figure is, its too high, more needs to be done to get the safe sex message across..

I know this might sound like a dumb statement, but do any LBs take the time to test themselves for their own concern, just to see if they are ok or do they like to remain ignorant ?

All this is reality so thank you for raising it as an issue...... puts me off sex with LB just reading it, but I know when its my next trip I will indulge .... just use condoms is always the message here and its good to be reminded why from time to time especially as there are so many bareback videos around!!

I only know 2 who have told me they get tested but then it's not a subject I tend to discuss that often with LBs. It's not like it's the next question asked after whats your name ? where do you come from ?

I do know from one LB whose friend was diagnosed positive, that it shocked her and a few of her friends into getting tested, at least that's what she told me.

I found Christian's post pretty scary. The LBs who tested positive must have been ignorant of the fact or they would never have come forward to do porn as they knew they would get tested. If 20% or so was his experience then imagine the actual percentage if you add the LBs who know they are positive. Being positive sure as hell does not stop them working. Given the figures Konguk linked to, I see no reason to think that the figure is less then 25-30%.

I think a letter to the Times is in order. Someone should do something about it.

Seriously, what practical steps do you propose ? I like the fact that bars like Lita's have ample supply of condoms and lube in their rooms and I'd like to see that in all bars but apart from making condoms freely available what other things would you like to see ?

I'm talking about in school, you have to get the message across at a young age, many TGs have little to no real sex education, it really amazes me.

Unfortunately, I do not find the link anymore...

But I remember reading a study about HIV in Thailand, claiming a 15% infection rate among sex workers and an even higher one among gays.
However, also claiming, the rate among the general (not P4P) LB population being far lower.

Doesn't anyway mean so much, if it's now 15 or 30%, unless it is considerably lower:
Also someone coming on holiday here for a fortnight, changing his LB bed companion daily, has with 15% already had sex with 2 HIV positives (statistically).

I assume, it's mostly more like the Emu putting his head in the sand...

Additionally, it's the reaction of the people around them, not being aware of the progress of modern medicine.

And third, I assume, being afraid, taking antiviral drugs is making them tired and unable to work to feed the bloodsuckers in the village. So they try to delay it, until they "retire".

Well I was brought up in Ireland in the 70s so it doesn't amaze me at all. Sex education in school is something that may be taken for granted in liberal western countries but it's not the norm in most other countries. Thailand is quite conservative and the current administration is unlikely to encourage a more liberal way of thinking.

I've heard that it's easy to get a fake certificate drawn up, so unless you go to a clinic with the LB I wouldn't believe it. My punts are 90% ladies but after reading these posts and the possibility of 20+ percent infection rates I'll be pretty much exclusively seeing ladies from now on with the occasional LB if I find one I really fancy. I've always worn Condoms anyway but fucking pussy with protection is the safest bet...

You know Truvada exists? It's a very small price to pay for complete peace of mind. Been on it for 6+ months, no side effects (The stronger version called Atripla (3 drugs) will probably make u sleep, but that's used as Post-exposure not Pre-exposure).

The doctor I see monthly to get my Truvada also mentioned 20%+ infeciton in the MtM community, which seems similar to other reports in the thread.

Hoping a cure comes soon enough, even though living with it is minor compared to a few years ago, if anything just to get rid of the stigma behind it.

Atripla is primarily used to threat HIV infection but can probably be used as PEP as well. No idea why you think it would make you sleepy? it is one of the most potent drug regimes currently on the market and has a very low side effect profile.

Regarding your Truvada. Are you getting it in Pattaya? If so could you tell us a little more about how to go about getting it? where? what the costs are and so on?

I'm regularly getting PM's from BM's that wan't to get it in Pattaya. But I don't know much about how to get it other than the red cross clinic in BKK.

All I know is that dr. Philippe is not dealing with it as he has more than enough with his already positive patients.

Cheers

Sure, I was taking Atripla as I had a risky exposure (So in form of Post-Exposure), the 3 drug combo was really strong and almost immediately made me want to sleep, I am fine on Truvada (2 drug combo), but as soon as you add the 3rd the side effects hit me (Only dizziness / sleep).

I got my Atripla from Pattaya Memorial Hospital, since the risky incident I have been in contact with the doctor and just visit him monthly to get my Truvada.

His name is Dr. Teewin (his last name is super long I Just call him that, and the nurses also know who when I say his first name). But there's been times where he hasn't been in and I simply saw another doctor, explained that I am taking Truvada as PreP for peace of mind, and they're fine with giving it to me.

It's a bit pricey compared to Red Cross, its 4000 baht for a 30 day supply, but for someone like me living on the ground, it's just a monthly expense to stay safe.

Basically if you want Truvada, just visit Pattaya Memorial Hospital, tell the doctor you want to take it as PreP and a extra layer of protection, they will give you the usual safe sex lecture and then should prescribe it.

Since starting PrEp so you still use condoms?
