And why would anyone want to take a rolex there? First of all, they tend to just be ego boosters, but really who are these people trying to impress there, especially with the high risk of losing it, having it damaged or stolen? I just don't get their thinking.

that's a good question, but i have worn a Cartier watch for 15 years everyday of my life i even sleep with it on, it came from inheritance money when my Nan died and last year i lost my Mum so now wear a Cartier ring in memory of her....so what i am saying is not everyone wears 'posh' watches just to show off or 'ego boosters' and if they do then thats their decision or right. Thats said again a very useful post it's a big reminder to all of us to always take extra care and be sensible and you know what.............................I might well take my watch and ring off just for this trip, cheers and ' what was it Hill's Street Blues Cop used to say ....' take care out there'

I'm a bit skeptical about this story ....but nothing that happens in Thailand surprises me anymore .

1 - wouldn't the desk have her id
2 - who takes food/gum/pills from a LB ...especially a free lancer
3 - who spits it out because it tastes awful then puts it back in their mouth because a LB says to ....alarm bells should have gone off then.
4 - take enough money you need for the night - everything else in the safe & when i get back to room 1st think i do is put watch & left over money in the safe .

Prevention is better than a Cure

REF point 1, lots of small guesthouses do not have reception 24/7.... Believe me it did happen, as i helped the guy out... he was well messed up......STUPID i agree.... But hopefully he will never do it again..

I'd agree that extra caution is warranted. I have a very expensive watch that was a gift, but it never goes with me on mongering destinations. For those trips I have a $17 Casio piece of crap that is plastic, keeps perfect time, and is of no interest to thieves. Same with my cell phone--the iPhone stays in the safe and I use a beat-up old RAZR that no one would want. I take no jewelry of any sort with me. In my hotel room, everything that might be especially attractive, especially small things (the iPod, headphones, etc.) stays in the safe when I have guests. The vast majority of LBs and GGs are honest and trustworthy, but you have to plan around the other 10%. I caught one GG trying to leave with my camera, and have been ultra-cautious ever since.

Could not agree more, I live in Asia and I am here to tell you that we are walking around with bullseyes on our backs. Having the toys along is just begging for them to get stolen. Everyone already knows that you have plenty of money because you could afford the ticket and the hotels.

My mega-phone does not travel at all I have the cheapest little piece of crap that I could find for that. It does tell time though so I can leave my fancy watches at home too.

The bling is just stupid and that stays home as well. It invites muggings, kidnappings and other potential violence that no one needs. A little point and shoot is the only camera I would carry and even those only have a life expectancy of 6 months.

The ladies should wear strictly obvious costume stuff too. The thieves can't tell the real gold from the plate as they rip it off your neck from a motorcycle but they are not going to bother you if you are wearing wooden beads. Same same with the stones, they may be fake diamond earings but they still draw attention, wear plastic and enamel beach stuff.

Been punting for a few years now so I'm not niave anymore but it can still happen...I was in Angeles at Voodoo one night last year,.. the only foriegner left in the club at around 4am... was sitting with the mamasan and flirting with her big bolt ons then everything went hazy ... I remember a struggle in the bench seats, me cussing up a storm and then holding on to the vip table as my body gyrated as I tried to mantian my balance... I made it out to the street and into my room and was woke up 12 hours later by security because I was supposed to check out... felt like my head was hit by a sledge hammer and was numb for about 24 hours...and of course my modest gold ring was gone...don't know what drug it was...but definetly it was slipped into my drink

one other time in Angeles, I was at TI and was very early in the evening, still light out, I had just basically started partying and drank a SML, I have a pretty strong stomach and I'm a pretty big guy, about 240lbs., I can drink all night but I had to run out in the street and throw up, something wasn't right about that beer, not sure if a drug can cause that much nausia but that early in the evening I wasn't drunk yet, I could definitely taste something wrong with that beer

I was drugged in insomnia only 6 weeks ago luckily i was staying on soi 14 so i managed to make it back to my room before passing out , i woke up at 4 in the afternoon. feeling like shit

I normally stay at the flipper house on soi 7 and they have a good policy of the security ringing your room when your guest is leaving to make sure everything is ok.

One rule I learned from an "oldtimer" before my first trip to Asia: Always have a close look on your glass, best: keep it in our hand, if you have to leave it somewhere eg. going to the hong nam, buy a new drink. (Knocking on wood...) up to now I kept to this rule and was lucky with it.
