I have hit the Blue Parrot a couple of times, and it is pretty good. Any other suggestions for good Mexican Food in town? I live in Japan, and the options here are total shit. Had a burrito at what was suppose to be the best Mexican Place in Osaka, and the cheese was Velveta and the Chicken tasted canned. I grew up in Texas, so I miss my Tex-Mex with a passion.

OK this is going to sound like a bit of a hassle but, I live in S. California & as many Mexican markets and taco places here almost as Mexico.
If I had to have mexican food while in LOS but did not like the choice's, I would get both corn & flour tortilla's some as they make them, put them in my luggage,
Bring a couple of cans of refried beans & of course some Mexican spice and hot sauce of my choice. Hey you want Mexican food ?
Ok keep the tortilla's in the fridge, go get fresh onion, chiles, cilantro, tomato & lime. You can make your own "pico de gallo" yourself
and in Pattaya you will be able to find some little place that can chop up some fried or grilled pork / chicken with your spice.
If you have to have it !!! And get your buddy's to chip in.
Myself , I don't think the Mexican food in LOS is worth eating, but a lot of Thai food has the same ingredients.
So bring your tortilla's and put " larb " on them ???

Sorry, LBL, but not an option for me as I live her 24/7/365 & have no plans to return to the US. But you are correct, many of the ingredients are available here. Good cheese can be found here but it is very expensive.

Most houses & condo's here do not have ovens, so cooking/baking burritos, enchilada's or even cookies for that matter, is not possible for most folks.

You can get tortilla chips, brand Danitas, but they have a long way to go to being anything like fresh tortilla chips.

But like I said, if in Pattaya, just try Bob's BBQ or Tequilla Reef.

I'll let you know next time I go to Patt's ( maybe Feb. ) And if I have room in my luggage I'll bring those things.
I bet it would still beat most of the Mexican places there. Let me know if your interested.

+1 for this place. I always stop here whenever I am cruising around soi Buakouw. Not the most 'authentic' Mexican food you are gonna find (I live in Australia, but my ex-mother in law was Mexican), but it tastes good, its cheap, and you can sit and watch the goings on of soi Buakouw. Ive been known to spot something tasty to eat for dessert walking past from time to time...

this may be a bit off topic as it deals mostly with preparing your own Mex in LOS/PTY. sorry if this is hijacking, just trying to provide intel.

the original owner of Tequila Reef is the current owner of Los Cabos on Soi 14 in BKK. he is also the guy behind the menus at Mojos and the Great American Rib restaurants both here in BKK (there used to be one on Theprasit in Jomtien). Note: these places have state of the art smoke pit ovens similar to the ones in the States and the ribs and pulled pork in these joints is most often superb. he really knows what he is doing as he was a professional chef in So. Cal before immigrating here. the problem is after he leaves a place they muck it up, water it down and do all sorts of blasphemous things to his food.

that said, for those who are here LT and have condos, apts, or kitchenettes, Foodland supermarkets have everything you will need to make Mex. re-fried beans, a variety of fresh tortillas and chips and all the mainstream products by Casa Fiesta and Old El Paso, have not seen Goya here yet. Villa Markets also carry a wider range of prepared Mex and a vast array of chips, salsa and queso but you will need to mortgage your house to buy stuff there. Villa also carries skirt steak which is most often the cut of choice for fajitas.

as far as an oven, no brainer if you have a stove, electric or gas. place a large pot on the burner, place a wire rack in the pot, place a pie tin or pizza tin on the rack (no rack, use a tuna fish can with the label removed and both ends cut out). then put the heat on low, place the food on tin, cover and "bake". i have been doing this for years as i only have one of those orange gas tanks the vendors use. all the other stuff can be prepared in a saute pan or in a microwave if you must. only crispy foods require dry heat form an oven. burritos can be micro'd, not the best scenario, but not too bad.

ps - if in HKT go to Karon Village (10 to 15 minutes from Patong) and try Las Margaritas.owner is from Colorado, not a bad place to learn Mex. he calls the place a Tropical Cuisine Restaurant as he has expanded the menu to more than Mex. been open for ages and always gets good revues. he uses the best meats and products and all is made to order. even frying the chips.

as far as Chiang Mai, dunno. it is that much further from Mexicali so you may not be able to get that ring-o-fire you seek. :Trouser Cough: best to have a LB give it to you instead. :D

For those that are on the make your own plan, you can go to most Indian places and ask for some plain unspiced chapattis. The baked ones, not the fried ones. A very good flour tortilla substitute. You will never match the hand made corn tortillas that you can get in Mexico though. Let's not even get started on the fluffy hand wrapped tamales fresh out of the steamer. :Cry 1:

For the best salsa, slice some onions, and tomatos real thick and throw them in a hot fairly dry skillet or on the grill until they get black all over. Do the same thing with a pile of whole chilis and whole garlic cloves. Take all of it and whiz it up in a blender (molcajete if you have one) with some cilantro(coriander leaf), salt and lime juice. This is the real thing in Mexico. Really killer tuff.

Tequila Reef used to be a great place to eat Mexican food .
Sadly the place is slowly slipping down hill , i remember when it first opened and the owner was there every night and the food was fantastic .
Now the owner looks real beaten down and worn out with the place , sad really and maybe he has been in fun town to long .

the reason the food is not the same is the partner who was the chef left about 5 or 6 years ago. he has since started 3 other restaurants with similar cuisine: Mojo's on Suk soi 33 in BKK, Great American Rib on Suk soi 36 in BKK and a branch in Hua Hin, and he now has a place in BKK as i stated above that is on Suk soi 14.

typically when the original chef leaves any restaurant things will start to slide. some places can maintain if the staff that were trained by the original chef remain, but if they start to go the product will become even more watered down and further from its origin. for the original food that was engineered by this chef you must now go to soi 14 in BKK.

I know the owner of Tequila Reef and he lives in the Philippines in Angeles City. Met him a few times.

I actually like the food at Tequila Reef but prefer the one in AC.

Mike's Mexican
No mention of Mike's Mexican? CRAZY!!!!! On the hill between Pattaya and Jomtien and IMO the best Mexican food in Pattaya. Best guacamole for sure.

Sunrise Tacos
There's a new Sunrise Taco's in Jomtien next to Shennanigans. Same company with a few branches in Bangkok. Delicious tacos and other stuff. The salsa bar is a nice touch. Warning: They have the worst chips on the planet. Like eating broken glass. Hard, sharp, tasteless and stale. Here's their website shows suspended for now Sunrise Tacos. They have a satellite taco truck parked at The Avenue. Haven't tried it yet.

Tequila Reef
Tequila Reef on Soi 7 is ok. Good fish tacos, enchiladas and margaritas. More than once received chips with ants crawling all over them so avoid it.

Blue Parrot
Found Blue Parrot by accident on the way up to Obsessions on Soi 13/4. A few years ago it was the first place I had a proper fried chimichunga in Thailand. The shredded chicken was delicious as was the salsa. Was a regular there then didn't go for a few years. Last time in the quality was way down. I'll have to try it again to see what the current situation is.

Shenanigans
Mentioned earlier Shenanigans has a few decent Mexican items on the menu. The fajitas as amazing but crazy expensive. Close to 500 baht for an order. They have daily specials, and believe Thursday is day for 250 baht fajitas. Go on the special day for a deal.

Lone Star
Good fajitas, under 300 baht and full selection of Mexican items. One of the few places that gives you a respectable amount of tortillas with your order (around 6). The fajitas (chicken) were a little light on the chicken but lots of onion and bell peppers. Marinated well.

Sam's Mexican
I hope Sam's is still there. Tucked behind the plaza as you turn near the Hanuman statue and head to the beach. Sadly haven't made it there for a looong time so don't have a recent review of it.

I don't think I like Mexican food - but then again I've never tried it ! If I did want to try some I would go to Sunrise Tacos in Jomtien - at least I would be assured of a table as I've scarcely seen any one in there. I prefer Sausages so I would relocate next door to The Mucky Duck and the LB's. 5555

:Rolling: Best name for a bar, restaurant etc. I've ever heard, I will check them out on my next trip if only for a picture of the sign(hopefully they have t-shirts) and of course some mexican food,as I grew up in the southwest and do like my mexican food.
