PATTAYA: -- A 350-strong Police operation effectively shut down the popular bars in Soi 6 off Pattaya Second Road on Wednesday Night.
The operation began with a parade and briefing at Pattaya Police Station led by Police Colonel Tirapong, the Deputy Commander of Chonburi Provincial Police. The officers then made their way to the street and entered more than 50 bars along the street and checked over 500 workers for drugs.
Urine tests were conducted and 16 women and transsexuals were arrested and later charged with consuming a class 1 drug. Police are concerned that during the high season months many drug dealers are operating out of bars around Pattaya and will use this time to sell drugs to Tourists.
Despite their concerns no actual drugs were found in the raid which angered many of the bar owners in the street who questioned the constant targeting of the street whereas other areas receive no visits from Police.

I don't know how many times I have been offered drugs while taking a gentle stroll down the coconut bar, and that's during the day!!!

The idea is to make way for more package tourists to stay in the new hotels like the hilton, holiday inn, etc etc.
That would leave only walking street and the area back from soi buakhao for bars.
This plan provides a big boost for the mayor and his mates, the developers and the big hotel chains - there is no room in
this equation for small bars.

Or is it more likely that someone leaked this ahead of time?
Just asking.

Pattaya does need to find a way to attract more tourists and not just the sex tourists .. if you live here you can see that there are many good companies that will not trade here because they fear that once they open a bar will pop up next door and scare the other punters away .. and its true .
Imagine opening a classy little restaurant , expecting family clientele and next day a couple of bars open up , blaring loud music and the girls screaming and yelling handsome man all night ... not perfect for business .
There are over 16000 bars in Pattaya .. overkill .. I think so

How great it is to be a police officer ... collecting 350 urine samples (at least it was all on one street)

- I would not expect that any shop in Central Festival or the Hilton make their contributions to the BIB's "pension fund"..., but perhaps I am wrong?
