samui can be a nice place and it was where i first went in '88, '89 and '90. that was when the island was all dirt roads except the ring road, there was no airport, and Lamai was a boxing camp and one disco. Chawaeng was the Mango disco and some guest houses and bungalows.
needless to say the island has become much more in the last 25 years and the island is now considered to be over-built. an expat friend of mine (who i met at Guess Bar and is into LBs) was transferred there in the fall by his company and he says what everyone is saying, FL and late at night, that is the scene, but not too bad if you know where and when to show up.
i will try to get some more info from him and pass it on. but can not promise that.

ok, spoke to my firend and here's the scoop as of today:
Its all happening late. he goes to dinner, hangs around and has some drinks, relaxes and then hits the bricks.
2 Places -
Chrysties Cabaret in Chawaeng, next to the Burger King, it starts at about 11:00 pm
OR
Soi Green Mango also Chawaeng, starts about 01:30 am
he says Lamai is scant on LB action but it is known for the moto-hoes (LBs on motorbikes.) also very late.
he says pickin's are good and there are many girls out and about but it all starts very late.
BTW: he is a picky guy and if he says there are choices i tend to believe him.
going rate is, and i quote: "similar to Pattaya, 1,000 is not quiet enough and 2,00 is a bit too much."
in regard to the locals on Samui, they have one of the strongest mafias in TH and i believe it is controlled by only 2 or 3 families. the fact, as is also mentioned, that business has been slow is a double edged sword. it will be peaceful and uncrowded, some things may be better bargained for, but the locals will be hurting and many will be more aggressive and asking a noob for more than what things really do cost.
do not argue with local transport on Samui, it is not worth the grief. just try to understand what things cost and that you are at tehir mercy once the sun goes down.
on my last trip a few years ago i found many of the locals to be impolite.
ps - look on your tourist map and find the waterfalls inland, a nice afternoon swimming there is always a joy if the water level i up. be careful diving into the pool there though, it can be shallow in parts.
the Jungle Canopy tour is also great and a goods outing. run by farangs and staffed by Thais i found it to be exhilarating and safe. i actually went during a rain storm and had a blast, no problem, and not so hot and the mosquitoes are not flying around when it rains. after the rain, they swarm.
