Was surprised to see on the News last night the military of both countries exchanging rifle rounds and heavy ordnance. Any thoughts about this situation that has the potential for war? Make LOVE Not WAR :Surrender:

It has been going on for a long time now. They do this about once a year, lasts for a short time, then they go back to a shaky peace for another year. All goes back to early 1900s when the border was originally drawn and the surveyors apparently favored Cambodia by drawing the boundary to put Preah Vihear temple in Cambodia. Heres a limk that explains some of it. http://en.wikipedia....h_Vihear_Temple

Sad but true... war will be a positive thing. :Thumbs Down:

I come from ex Yugoslavia and believe me.. I've been part of the ugliest war world has seen in a long time... But still I think this war will, although for only short time, be positive for Thailand. Why? Thailand is a country divided with deep differences between red mob and yellow hi-so elite and this will probably be a binding factor between two parts of society that hate each other’s guts.

And a bit of a skirmish should have the effect of giving us more baht to the pound.

You guys make me sick. Nothing good will come out of a war. Even if it is like you say Robi. Yes Thailand is divided, but war with Cambodia will not make thing better. An end to the military dictation will, not war.
I feel sorry you had to be a part of the war in Yugoslavia, but why didn't you run to Scandinavia? I know for sure Sweden would give you money and an apartment for free. The south of Sweden are mainly from Balkan :P ... Maybe a bad joke, but Swedish people know what I am talking about.

Up to you what you believe but, I still think both Cambodia and Thailand has mutual benefits from this war as long as it won't spread too much, why are they so keen to repeat it year after year without any proper skirmish… It’s good for both ruling elite to show some patriotism and divert folks from real problems like corruption and crime.

p.s.
I'm from Slovenia, we won our the war in 10 days and we never run. :Army Salute:

Tell that to the west who are at war all over the globe. Someone always profits from war or they would not have them. If a war did break out then a lot of tourists would boycott Thailand, the Baht would drop in value, there would be a lack of customers for the sex industry as a whole (no pun intended). Now as to the morals of taking advantage of that situation....... TAXI!

If you take a moment to see what the dispute is about (Preah Vihear Temple) you will notice it looks like fuck all you've ever seen in Thailand, but like everything that's in Cambodia as it was built by the Khmer.

The thais should get the fuck out and leave the Cambodians alone with what is theirs.

I'm pretty gutted for mainly selfish reasons - sure into peace & love and all that, but am doing a 10 day Isaan tour in May and Preah Vihear was definitely on the itinerary (for the past several months, and what a site)! Why can't folks get along, if only for the sake of my sightseeing??

Seriously though, I think it's a damned shame, these cultures are intertwined over the years, and if they could only agree to disagree, everyone could get on and make some bucks!

It is a enchanted place on the edge of the Korat Plateau, and that is where the trouble started. The Korat Plateau is and has always been Thailand ( last two or more hundred years )
And was wrongly awarded to the Cambodia by the World Court based on faulty French maps. The Cambodians cant even easily get up there. The argument at the time was that it was a Khmer temple like Angkor Wat and that Thailand already had enough temple's. And if anyone on the on the world court would have done a " fact check " they would have found many Khmer temples in the Isaan. Wat Phimai ? My wife is from Kun Han, Sisaket and very close to it. We went there in 2000 after our wedding.
Had the Kingdom of Thailand been awarded it, Preah Vihear Temple would now be restored to it's glory.

Agree 100 percent. French purposely went off course when they did the survey to favor Cambodia. :No No Tut Tut: The only easy access to the site is in Thailand also.

The border clash between Thai and Cambodian troops has resume after the Friday fighting in which at least six soldiers were killed.

Posted ImageThe military exchanged artillery and gunfire in jungle around Ta Krabey temple, which both countries claim.

The area is about 200km west of the disputed 900-year-old Preah Vihear temple, where February clashes killed many people.

Thousands of civilians have been evacuated from the area.

“Fresh fighting started at around 0600 (2300 GMT Friday) with rifles and mortar shelling,” said Thai army spokesman Col Prawit Hookaew.

“We are negotiating to stop the fighting,” he added.

Cambodia said artillery shelling had also taken place.

There were no immediate reports of casualties from Saturday’s exchanges.

Until Friday, an informal truce had appeared to be holding.

Cambodia said three of its soldiers were killed on Friday and six wounded while a Thai spokesman said three of its soldiers had been killed and 11 injured.

Both sides blamed each other for the fighting.

Indonesia, the Chair of regional group Asean has called for an immediate ceasefire.

Preah Vihear temple was awarded to Cambodia in 1962 by an international court.

But both countries claim ownership of the surrounding area, and there have been several skirmishes there in recent years.

Other parts of the Thai-Cambodian border have not yet been formally demarcated, causing continuing tensions between the two countries.
