I read another post about hiding files and encryption here's the freeware I use:

Free Hide Folder download.com

FHF password-protects and hides folders. Install FHF on a drive OTHER than 'C' so it doesn't appear in Windows Program Files. (bury it in a non-obvious folder) Easy to use and very effective. The folder can be found with some effort but the files will still be hidden; it allows plausible deniability by saying you bought the computer/drive second-hand. I hide my naughty pics and videos whenever I travel with my notebook.

BestCrypt Traveller jetico.com

BCT encrypts folders and drives using military-strength encryption. BCT is portable so install it on a USB stick; also I sent myself an email with BCT attached in case I don't have the USB or lose it. Jetico has other excellent encryption and disk wipe products too.

Glary Utilities download.com
GU is a great Windows utilities I use to maintain my computers; it has many functions and it has file encryption as well. (haven't used it)

Word Document
Create a password-protected Word doc with all ID's and passwords in it. Again have it on a USB and email it to yourself too. There are several good password managers available too.

TrueCrypt is excellent too but I think BestCrypt is easier to use.

Hope this helps!

Very interesting,

I will be taking my laptop to Thailand for the first time in a few weeks.

Do I need to hide my naughty pics , vids, bookmarks etc?

Thanks

I've never been stopped or seen anyone stopped but you never know. More likely being searched returning to our home countries since LOS is known for child porn. I advise hiding photos and videos when travelling.

FYI - if you do use software to hide your files and customs does decide to look at your computer, they'll just impound it pending a more detailed examination (which can take months).

Best advice is upload your photos somewhere before travelling home.

Crafty Mr Tibbs ;)

Porn is not Illegal in the UK I dont care if somebody sees it, I am more concerned about Thailand and the middle east ( Abu Dhabi), but if I use dropbox I suppose it wil not matter either way

Thanks

SomTom, thanks for starting an important topic. I use TrueCrypt on my laptop and Pandora on my phone. But I agree with Terry, the safest option is to store things in the cloud. Even a simple Gmail account will allow access to storing photos, etc.

I've opened a DropBox account it is a good service.

SomTom,

thanks a lot for the great tip for 'Hide Folder'. I've been looking for ages for something simple but very effective like this to hide the odd folder or two.

Coincidently, I also 'password protect' documents that are 'sensitive' when I make a word document. It's easy to do (just ensure you remember the password - or you'll be stuffed!)

Many thanks.

SugarSync is another very similar to DropBox, but maybe a little easier to use. Both have a free version with a fair amount of storage.

Also, do not forget that a file erased from a disk, a card,... can easily be recovered. Glary Utilities offer this possibility. I prefer Recuva which works faster and is easy to use. Can recover also e-mail you binned, mp3 songs you removed from your player,... a very usefull tool to have. To get back to the point, as it is quite feasible to recover erased file, then erase well your files. Glary Utilities has a file shredder that does the job well.

Let me assume that none of us nice and decent guys take pics of underage GGs or LBs respectively do the deed with them although I know that sometimes it might be difficult to impossible to know.

In most European countries regular porn is not illegal and I guess all you might get is some funny remarks or raised eyebrows, unless they decide to scrutinize your PC, MAC, etc. further.

But here comes a question: In those countries where it is not like Saudi Arabia, etc. would a deleted file get you in trouble? I mean they know that in your country that material is not illegal, you dutifully deleted the stuff before entering their turf but there are traces that it has been there at some point in the past. Tricky, I think.

As for Thailand, I have never had a problem, neither in Cambo or China, and as I have been away from home since early 2005 more or less, I travel with 2 laptops (1 Mac, 1 PC), probably some 10 external hard drives - no they do not contain all porn ;-) - all just things I collect while away. My feeling is that U.S. customs is the most paranoid when it comes to this ...

Dropbox is good and gives you an initial 2 GB of space which should be enough for naughty holiday pics. However, the program exists on yr computer and even shows a small icon on my Mac. So, experienced inspectors could smell the rat.

I also find DP rather expensive if more storage space is needed.

Another option is an account with Rapidshare or similar (filesonic, fileserve, etc.) They run about 10 USD per month and less if you subscribe for a year and to my knowledge offer unlimited storage which is then only accessed by password. No program needed. Rapidshare has been around for many years as it has been my main source for downloading programs, training CDs, documentaries, etc., etc. Filesonic is good for all kinds of e-books.

But unless, as initially said, you are storing underage porn, I would not be too concerned. What would worry me though and I read this on some board in the past, that if US-authorities inspect yr PC, you have to prove that the girl in the picture is not underage and that might often be difficult with SE-Asians and Coconut Bar freelancers in particular.

Slows down your internet connection and your data is insecure. You could add an extra security layer that encrypts your data over your dropbox folder. :)

I prefere GnuPG. It's opensource. It's fast. It's secure. And it works. Five years ago the federals did a house search and took my hard drives. I still haven't received a letter from the Public Attorney's Office (or got my hard drives back). ;)

Unless you dont have nude pics of under age, I cant see any problem of why you should encrypt or hiding files/photos. But if you are afraid to loose pics, Dropboks is a good thing.
My cellphone and laptop have password for open. Maybe a good nerd can hack into it..
But my camera has not and if someone should get theire hands on my camera and put some pics of me and a ladyboy to the net, what can I do about it? Sue them??

Dont worry, be happy!

I would always opt for the upload route unless your really have doggy internet access (which is not the case in Thailand). That said, I've never in any of my travels had someone request to look at my drives (they wouldn't find anything damning if they did)
