I tried today to view some older threads - oct 2011, so not too old, and I was surprised that all the picture attachments wouldn't display.

Are picture attachments on some sort of auto-delete?

No... why would we delete pictures? might help if you provide some links.

Sometimes I have noticed such a thing, but it's usually when the memory on my computer is reaching it's limit.

Close some windows or applications and refresh the page and I think it'll fix itself.

I think maybe the OP of those photos may have deleted them by using manage attachments function although not certain. Perhaps you could ask the OP, and it may be worth deleting the whole thread if thats the case.
